Alternative medicine. Some people call it snake oil while others swear by the benefits of the lifestyle principles that they follow. I am a skeptic about some of the proponents and their beliefs, but I am also not naive to think that the medical establishment is not out to make a profit or that they have all the answers. Who does really?
I was curious about alternative medicine and happened to attend a business roundup that featured an alternative medicine practice with a physical therapist. The people were nice and approachable and I was curious about different perspectives about health and decided to engage with them and see what their approach had to offer.
Much of the conversation was about empowerment. According to the representatives of the practice, modern medicine had indeed implemented innovation to improve outcomes for trauma. However, for every day health, the medical establishment is too focused on residual income in the form of prescriptions instead of trying to cure the patient or reduce the symptoms to the point they are not acute enough to justify the prescription.
We talked further how people were having trouble living healthy lives due to food additives, toxins, etc. in the food supply. They encouraged eating single ingredient foods without chemicals the average person can barely pronounce and to watch the input. Staff members offered tips on seasoning food and cooking and mentioned that they have a healthy eating chef who partnered with them to help teach classes on how to cook good tasting healthy food quickly.
Another member of the staff and I struck up a conversation about kinesiology. I had previous experience with the subject when I had worked in an industry that used the term and demonstrations in point of sale materials. Their staff offered a promotional assessment to go over what foods were good for me and what nutrition my body really needed.
I was intrigued and noted in my head that I would need to try this in the future. That was when the staff member I had discussed kinesiology with asked me to pick one of three vessels to hold. I selected the one with chocolate. While holding the vessel, I was asked to try and resist them from pushing my arm down. Sadly, the one I scored poorest on was chocolate. They told me that chocolate made me weaker. (Don’t I know it!)
Overall, these were really great people and I’ll let you know about the outcome of the cooking class and my opinions about the assessment. Cheers!
